The exhibition will be held at two sites: the historic building of Palazzo Riso, home of the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea della Sicilia, which will exhibit masterpieces of international contemporary art, and the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia Palazzo Abatellis, which houses the fresco Il Trionfo della Morte [The Triumph of Death] which will be displayed side by side with contemporary artworks, putting them in explicit dialogue with the fifteenth-century fresco about the concepts of Time and Death as “essential experiences” of life.
Essential Experiences hosts more than twenty of the greatest artists of the contemporary scene – among them: Gilbert&George, Gloria Friedmann, William Kentridge, Anselm Kiefer, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Paolo Grassino, Danica Dakić, Kevin Francis Gray, Koji Tanada, Lee Ufan, Roman Opalka, Jan Fabre ,Giuseppe Penone, Gunther Uecker, Kimsooja – and presents three new productions, commissioned by Riso, by Dennis Oppenheim, Pedro Cabrita Reis and Richard Nonas. These three commissioned works address fundamental ethical questions relating to the concept of “creation,” the idea of the artist’s responsibility, and the ability to involve the spectator in the artist’s creative journey of interpreting the great existential themes – the passage of time, death, solitude, identity, love – through signs, symbols and metaphors, which are both simple and complex at the same time.
