Croce Taravella's paintings are characterized by a dense use of material and by strong chromatic contrasts. Scenes framed like photographs, especially in the city- and landscapes, are combined in vigorous brushstrokes and bursts of light to create an unprecedented version of the initial subject. Many of these works deal with Sicilian cities, re-presented through a language clearly influenced by Expressionism and Abstract Expressionism.Taravella also makes installations, in which he combines human-scale landscapes with ceramic and terra-cotta sculptures. Here, his research on the relationship between man and habitat is accompanied by a reflection on perception as related to individual and collective memory.
