Born in Catania in 1973. Lives in New York Sandra Virlinzi began exhibiting in the mid-1990s with the group the ‘Ultrapop,' a sort of painting characterized by its flatness and lively use of color, which draws more on the language of advertising than that of comics. Her research has continued freely since 2005, distinguished by the subjects-puppets it portrays and by the attention given to background decoration. The figures express various themes such as generational contrasts and an attachment to one's roots. Through caricature deformation and arbitrariness in proportion, Virlinzi's work takes on a playful, humorous tone that does not negate a scathing capacity for social criticism. The ceramic works conserve this ironic content; the artist plays with the words in the titles, some of which suggest the different meanings inherent in the word itself (China).
